Midland Metropolitan University Hospital Masterplan

State-of-the-Art Healthcare Facility 

The Midland Metropolitan University Hospital is a brand new, state-of-the-art facility currently under construction that will centralize services within Sandwell and West Birmingham. The hospital provides A&E and acute medical services with over 600 beds and 14 operating theatres, alongside maternity and pediatric services. The facility features an elevated winter garden that serves as both public open space and performance venue, creating a unique community asset within the healthcare facility.

Site Integration and Strategic Planning 

The inclusive masterplan on the 17-acre site creates permeability into and through the development while preserving connections along the existing canal arm. The design leverages the site's 7-meter cross fall to reduce the building's visual bulk. The main hospital development is positioned to the north of the plot, opening up the southern area for public green space that benefits both hospital users and the local community. Additional development plots have been identified in the southern section, strategically located to allow future expansion without disrupting main hospital operations.

Stakeholder Engagement and Design Process 

The design development involved extensive consultation with statutory stakeholders and the public through regular meetings with internal users and external groups. A formal design review process with MADE and regular pre-planning meetings with local planning authority ensured thorough evaluation and smooth project progression. This comprehensive approach validated design decisions and facilitated community buy-in for the project.

This masterplan creates a healthcare-centered community hub that integrates essential medical services with public amenities and green space, establishing a new model for hospital development that serves both immediate healthcare needs and broader community wellbeing.
