Mountain Site Design Solution
The Regional Bellinzona Hospital extension addresses the challenges of a congested mountain site with beautiful views through a simple, compact volume housing six new operating theatres and annex spaces on a single level. Two lower levels provide additional staff areas and storage, creating efficient vertical organization while minimizing the building's footprint on the constrained site.
Green Roof and Garden Integration
The building features a green roof with a landscaped terrace directly accessible from the entrance and café, while a new glazed pavilion serves as gateway to a garden walkway offering panoramic views of the Magadino valley. The compact design minimizes impact on the existing hospital and garden while improving the main entrance and strengthening connections to the surrounding landscape.
Sustainable Construction Approach
The internal layout follows simple, regular patterns optimized for functionality and cost efficiency. The modular building design uses prefabricated sustainable cross laminated timber construction, meeting client requirements to minimize construction time while reducing noise and disruption to ongoing hospital operations.
This extension demonstrates how thoughtful design can successfully integrate new healthcare facilities into sensitive environments while maintaining operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
